What a private guide in Osaka costs

Start with the cheapest door in. Our own listing offers a group walk from $36, rated 4.8 from 1,634 reviews, and the same listing sells private tours for those who want the guide to themselves. Each private-group listing on this page has its own starting figure, and the spread is wide because the products differ: a short intro walk is a different purchase from a licensed guide for a working day.

The private walking listings sit in the middle. A custom walking tour with a local guide starts from $61, a highlights walk from $67, a 3 to 5 hour private tour from $115 and a fully customized tour that starts at your hotel from $108. Each figure is a from price, which means the lowest the booking page shows, and the total for your length of day and party size appears when you choose a date.

At the top of the walking range is the licensed guide. That listing starts from $187 and runs 4 to 8 hours, with an English and Japanese guide. Price rises with hours, so the useful question is not the cheapest guide but how much of the city you want to cover.

Licensed or not: what the word means

The Japan National Tourism Organization explains that National Government Licensed Guide Interpreters have passed the national examinations and offer their services in 10 languages.1 A licence is a mark of exam-tested knowledge, and it is a different thing from a friendly local who guides for a living. A licence says something about the person, and it is not a score for the tour. An Osaka private tour guide may or may not hold one, so read the listing.

The same JNTO page advises booking through a travel agency or when you book your trip, and it adds that you should always check and confirm that a licensed guide interpreter will conduct the tour, as it is not always a guarantee.5 If a licence matters to you, look for it in the listing title, as one Osaka listing does when it names a licensed guide, and ask the guide to confirm.

Licensed guides are generally independent professionals, and JNTO notes that you can also request one through a national organization.6 The licensed listing here comes with a catch worth knowing: it is not confirmed until a guide accepts it, and most guides make contact within 7 days. If you travel at short notice, allow for that wait.

What the price does not cover

Entry fees are the biggest extra. Osaka Castle charges 1,200 yen for an adult to enter the main tower, the Umeda Sky Building observatory charges 2,000 yen, and Tsutenkaku charges 1,500 yen.7,8,9 One private listing states that if you add an attraction, you cover the guide's entrance cost too. Budget for that before you pick the longest day.

Passes can trim the bill. The Osaka e-pass opens over 25 tourist spots with one QR code and leaves trains and buses out, and Tsutenkaku admission is free with it.10,9 For moving around, the Enjoy Eco Card gives a day of unlimited Osaka Metro and city bus travel for 820 yen for adults, or 620 yen on weekends and holidays.11 Ask your guide which pass fits the route you choose before you buy anything.

Transport and food are separate lines on several listings. Tickets, transportation, food and drinks can be arranged at extra cost on the custom walks, and hotel pickup on one 4-hour walk costs an extra 5000 yen. Tipping is not part of the picture, because there is no custom of leaving tips in Japan and a thank you is enough.2

A short chooser

Which kind of private guide fits you

Start with how much of Osaka you want to see, how you travel and how soon you leave.

  • If It is my first afternoon and I want the big picture

Our 3 hour group walk or a private version of it

The group walk covers Namba, Dotonbori and Kuromon in 3 hours.

  • If I want the castle on the route

A private tour of 4 hours or more

Only the private 4, 5 and 7 hour tours go to Osaka Castle.

  • If I want a guide with a national licence

    The licensed guide day

That listing names a licensed guide and runs 4 to 8 hours.

  • If I travel at short notice

A listing you can book now

The licensed day is not confirmed until a guide accepts it, so allow for that wait.

  • If I want the guide to meet me at my hotel

A private tour with hotel pickup

Our private tours can have a pickup, and one other tour meets at your accommodation on foot.

Hours decide the day

Our listing shows how hours turn into places. The group tour lasts 3 hours, and the private tours run 4, 5 or 7 hours. The group stops are Namba, an ukiyo-e museum, Hozenji Yokocho, Mitsu Park, a street-food stop, the Glico sign, the Dotonbori river and Kuromon Market. That is a dense loop of food and neon signs.

Longer private days add the sights that need time. Only the private 4, 5 and 7 hour tours go to Osaka Castle, and the 3 hour tours do not. The castle alone is listed at approximately 60 minutes, and the longer private days can also add Shitennoji, a knife shop and the Museum of Housing and Living.12 If the castle is on your list, book a private day of 4 hours or more.

A custom walk can stretch further. Two listings run 2 to 8 hours, and a licensed day runs 4 to 8 hours, so the guide builds the route around your pace. Walking is part of the deal, and one group listing reports almost 10 km on foot, which is a useful benchmark when you decide how long a day your legs want.

Our own tour, group or private

Our listing is a walking tour of Osaka sold two ways. The group version meets at exit 24 of Namba metro station at the top of the stairs and takes at most 9 guests. The private version is personalized, and only the private tours can have a hotel pickup, provided the hotel is centrally located and you send the hotel details at least the day before.

Food on this tour is a small gesture and not a meal: a very small snack of takoyaki and a drink from a vending machine. Plan lunch separately. The tour runs rain or shine, and it is cancelled with a full refund only in very serious weather, such as a typhoon or earthquake. Guests praise the guides' stories and the streets they would never have found alone.

Booking is flexible: you can reserve now and pay later, and free cancellation runs up to 24 hours before the start. The guide speaks English, and one reviewer was guided in English and Portuguese. If your plan is a local guide for a private afternoon, this listing is the lowest-risk way to try it, and the private option is on the same page.

Before you book

A checklist for hiring a private guide

Decide first3

  • Pick the hours: 4, 5 or 7 hours if the castle is on the list
  • Choose group or private, and the party size for your date
  • Decide whether a licence matters to you5

Check the extras3

  • Count entry fees, including the guide's ticket where stated
  • Ask about transport and food costs on custom walks
  • Ask whether hotel pickup costs extra

Before the day3

  • Send hotel details the day before on our private tours
  • Keep free cancellation in mind: up to 24 hours before
  • Plan for rain or shine, with a refund only in serious weather

Booking a private guide well

Book with lead time in mind. One highlights walk asks for booking at least 72 hours in advance so the itinerary can be organised, and a luxury-vehicle listing needs itineraries at least 24 hours ahead or it falls back to a default route. A licensed day may take up to 7 days to confirm. Our own private tours want your hotel details the day before.

Tell the guide what you want to skip. A custom walk can be requested for a particular start time, and a personalization form after booking shapes the route on another listing. Say whether food, shopping, history or neon matters most, and say if anyone struggles with long walks. The more specific the brief, the more a private guide earns the difference over a group walk.

Check the safety net before you pay. Every private listing named here offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, and our own listing lets you pay later. For tours by locals in Osaka, read the languages, group size and what the price leaves out, then choose the format and not just the lowest figure.
